Small donation drive for typhoon victims in Marikina City (typhoon Ulysses)
Small donation drive for typhoon victims in Marikina City
2020 has been very tough most especially for us Filipinos where up to this day as I am writing this, April 15, 2021 we are one of the countries greatly affected by the Covid-19 virus. As I was speaking, we have faced so many trials and difficulties during the past year, we have endured a lot yet we are still fighting today. But are you asking how are we surviving all of this? It is because we Filipinos help each other during this trying times and we have the "Bayanihan" spirit that strengthens each and everyone.
November 2020, typhoon Ulysses hit the Philippines and Marikina was one of the cities who was greatly affected from this. The said typhoon destroyed thousands of homes and made the cities deeply flooded. With the immense growth in the technology, social media has widen it's capacity to help others especially during this natural disaster and difficulties that our fellow citizens go through.
With the help of facebook and twitter, the cry of people for help was heard. As a citizen of the country, I felt the urged to help, and so I personally hosted a small donation drive through facebook. I posted my Gcash number in order to collect small amount of donations that I think will contribute to buy essentials like food during this crisis. My friends on facebook and I was able to collect a total of 27,002 pesos for five days. We also gathered in-kind donations that we have sent through foundations to be distributed to cities affected from the typhoon.
After we have encashed the donation, we immediately go to the supermarket to budget the amount and proceed to buy the things we can buy from all of the donations collected. Then we immediately packed it for distribution the next day.
With the help of the foundation mentioned above, we have picked Marikina city, as a beneficiary of this donation. We rented a jeepney in which we load the packed goods and proceeded in the area which the foundation had an ocular. It was one of the barangay that was greatly hit by the typhoon. We then proceeded to the barangay to communicate with the officials for proper distribution process. Luckily, we have arrived at the right time because the officials were about to distribute cooked meal for the families in their barangay so we came along with them.
As we arrived in the location, we have witnessed in our own eyes the damaged that the typhoon had leave to these people. We told them to line up as we distribute the packed goods. As we saw the smile on their faces, and that they are grateful for the help, the effort and time we had put through to make this happen was all worth it.
Living in this generation taught me that despite the drastic bad effects of the modern world, we can still have faith and hope that there will also be a good in every bad situation we are in. And that people are more easy to reach for help and there are also a lot of people that will go beyond their capacities to help people who are in need.
Again, I am grateful for everyone who made this small donation drive happen. I cannot to this all by myself without the help of everyone. I know we can all help even just by doing little things for others. It maybe a small act of kindness but what drives us into doing this is seeing the smile of the people who gained hope for this special moments.
God bless everyone, always be kind and stay safe!
